Everyone has had a theory they never wrote down. A hunch about how a show is going to end. A prediction about a market, a technology, a piece of news. A half formed idea about how something works that you are fairly sure is right, but you never said it anywhere it could be checked later.
So where does that thinking actually go?
01The unofficial options
Group chats and text threads. This is where most theories genuinely live. The problem is obvious once you think about it, nobody scrolls back. A theory said in a group chat six months ago is functionally gone, even if it turned out to be exactly right.
Reddit. Communities like r/FanTheories, r/conspiracy, r/theories, and hundreds of subject specific subreddits are full of genuine, often sharp theorising, and to be fair to Reddit, a post there is a real record, timestamped and tied to a username. But Reddit was not built for theories specifically, it was built for discussion. So a theory's reception depends on upvotes, timing, and whoever happens to scroll past it that day, rather than any consistent measure of the thinking itself. Two equally strong theories can land completely differently depending on luck, not merit, and that is a fair thing to say about a platform built for conversation, not for judging ideas on their own terms.
Notes apps and personal journals. Private, permanent in a sense, but invisible. A theory nobody else can see is a theory nobody can credit you for, and one you are unlikely to revisit yourself.
Prediction markets. Platforms built around forecasting are closer to structured, but they are financial instruments first. They are built for wagering on defined, resolvable outcomes, not for open ended theories, ideas, or the kind of thinking that does not reduce neatly to a yes or no market.
Twitter/X threads. Public, at least, and tied to an account. But built for immediacy, not for being weighed against anything else. There is no scoring, no structure, nothing that ranks one theory's thinking against another's.
02The official options
At the other end sits the world of actual academic and scientific theory, peer reviewed journals, formal research, institutional publishing. These exist for good reason, rigour, review, and accountability matter enormously when a theory is meant to hold up under real scrutiny.
But that world was never built for the person with a sharp hunch about how a show ends, a genuine idea about how something works, or a prediction they are confident enough to put their name to but has no interest in becoming a research paper. Peer review is not built for that kind of everyday, serious thinking, and it was never meant to be.
03What's actually missing
Somewhere between a group chat and a peer reviewed journal, there is a real gap. What is missing is not really about visibility, plenty of these options are public and can be found again.
What is missing is a place where a theory is judged and ranked by the quality of the thinking itself, using the same standard every time, rather than by upvotes, timing, or who happened to see it. Somewhere a theory stays exactly as written and dated, so if it later turns out to be right, there is a real, standing record of that. And somewhere strong thinking can actually be ranked against other strong thinking, cited, built on, and recognised for the effort behind it, not just for going viral at the right moment.
04Why this gap exists
Most of these platforms were not built for theories specifically. Reddit was built for discussion. Prediction markets were built for betting on outcomes. Journals were built for formal research. Theories, in the everyday sense, a real idea, seriously considered and put on record, have never really had a home built around them specifically.
05What RateMyTheory.ai is
RateMyTheory.ai is built to be that home.
It is a place to log your theories under your own name, on a permanent global record. Every theory gets properly considered and scored against consistent, standardised criteria, the same measure applied every time, not upvotes, not likes, not who happened to see it first. That score is what determines where a theory sits on the global leaderboard, ranked for the quality of the thinking and effort behind it, not for timing or luck.
You can build on theories other people have already recorded, adding your own thinking rather than starting from nothing, with strong contributions genuinely recognised rather than lost in a thread. And if something you have recorded is later confirmed true, it stays exactly as written, dated and credited to you, more on how that works is in the FAQ. No editing after the fact, no arguing about who called it first.
This is not a debate platform, and it is not about winning arguments or beating other people to the top of a leaderboard. It is about giving your own thinking, whatever kind of theory it is, fan theories, scientific hypotheses, conspiracy theories, predictions, philosophical ideas, a permanent, credited place to exist.
RateMyTheory.ai is coming soon. If you have ever had a theory you wished you had written down somewhere real, this is being built for you.
